Preparation of Elixir: Part 3


Sodium Bromide Elixir, NF

Other Name: Elixir Sodii Bromidi

Formula:

Sodium Bromide                         175 g
Purified Water                             460 ml
Syrup                                         200 ml
Aromatic Elixir, q.s.              ___________
             To make                       1000 ml

Preparation:

Dissolve the sodium bromide in the purified water. And the syrup and sufficient aromatic elixir to make the product measure 1000 ml. Mix well and filter, if necessary, to produce a clear product.

Possible Uses: Sedative and mild hypnotic. Also in the symptomatic treatment of epilepsy. Dose would be 5 ml.

Sodium Butabarbital Elixir, NF

Description: Each 100 ml contains 560 – 630 mg of C10H15N2NaO3.


Formula:

Sodium Butabarbital                                   6g
Sodium Saccharin                                      1 g
Compound Orange Spirit                       1.5 ml
Anethole                                              0.034 ml
Alcohol                                                   300 ml
Propylene Glycol                                    350 ml
Tartrazine (FD & C Yellow No. 5)             0.1 g
Purified Water, q.s.                            _________
              To make                                  1000 ml

Preparation:

Dissolve the sodium butabarbital, sodium saccharin, compound orange spirit and anethole in the alcohol. Add the propylene glycol. Dissolve the tartrazine in 50 ml of purified water and add to the first solution. Finally, add sufficient purified water to make the product measure 1000 ml. Mix well and filter, if necessary, to produce a clear elixir.

Uses: Sedative and hypnotic. It is an “intermediate-acting” barbiturate.

Dose: 5 ml

Sodium Pentobarbital Elixir, USP

Other Name: Elixir Pentobarbitali or Pentobarbital Elixir

Formula:

Sodium Pentobarbital                           4 g
Diluted Hydrochloric Acid                 6 ml
Glycerin                                            450 ml
Orange Oil                                       0.75 ml
Caramel                                               2 g
Syrup                                               150 ml
Alcohol                                            150 ml
Purified Water, q.s.                     ___________
              To make                            1000 ml

Preparation:

Dissolve the sodium pentobarbital in purified water, add the glycerin, alcohol, orange oil, caramel and syrup. Mix well, add the dilute hydrochloric acid and sufficient purified water to measure 1000 ml. Mix and filter, if necessary.

Uses: Sedative-hypnotic drug

Dose: Orally taken 15 to 300 mg, usually oral – 100 mg at bedtime.

Terpin Hydrate Elixir, NF

Other Name: Elixir Terpini Hydratis

Formula:

Terpin hydrate                                  17 g
Sweet Orange Peel Tincture           20 ml
Benzaldehyde                               0.05 ml
Glycerin                                        400 ml
Syrup                                            100 ml
Alcohol                                         430 ml
Purified Water, q.s.                   _________
              To make                         1000 ml

Preparation:

Dissolve the terpin hydrate in the alcohol, add the rest of the ingredients and sufficient quantity of purified water to make 1000 ml. Mix and filter, if necessary.

Dose: Usual dose is 5 ml which is equivalent to 85 mg of terpin hydrate.

Note: The terpin hydrate is dissolved due to the high alcoholic content of the elixir. Sweet orange peel tincture may be replaced by 1 ml of orange oil dissolved in 15 ml of alcohol.

Incompatibilities: Dilution of this elixir with water or liquids with low alcoholic content causes precipitation of the terpin hydrate.



Terpin Hydrate and Codeine Elixir, NF

Other Name: Elixir Terpini Hydratis et Codeine.

Formula:

Codeine                                       2 g
Terpin Hydrate Elixir, q.s.     _________
             To make                      1000 ml

Preparation: 

Dissolve the codeine in sufficient quantity of terpin hydrate elixir to make the product measure 1000 ml.

Uses: Expectorant and sedative used to allay excessive coughing. The value resides primarily on its codeine content.

Doses: Usual is 5 ml, equivalent to 10 mg of codeine and 85 mg of terpin hydrate.
