Branches of Toxicology and Their Definition

Clinical Toxicology
It focuses on the effects of substances in patients caused by inadvertently poisonings or intentional overdose of medications, drugs of abuse, household products, or various other chemicals.

Experimental Toxicology
It is the investigation of the toxic effects of chemicals in the biological system. It measures laboratory parameters such as Lethal Dose 50 (LD50), Lethal Concentration 50 (LC50), Threshold Limit Value (TLV).

Environmental Toxicology
It deals with the potential deleterious impact of chemicals, present as pollutants of the environment and to the living organisms.

Descriptive Toxicology
It concerned with toxicity testing which provides necessary information for safety evaluation and regulatory requirements.

Mechanistic Toxicology
It defines the mechanism of toxic action of poisons and toxic chemicals.

Forensic Toxicology
It concerned with the medico-legal aspects of the harmful effects of chemicals on humans and animals.
