Standard Operating Procedure – Drug Distributor: Good Storage Practice

Objective:
  • To ensure that proper storage of drugs is strictly followed.
  • Provide proper equipment that will provide for proper storage procedure.
  • Cold chain should strictly implement.

Scope:
  • Proper facilities and good storage should be provided for efficient handling of products.

Responsibility: 
  • Pharmacist

Procedure:
  • After receiving the new drugs from the manufacturer log it on the receiving logbook to make sure that the drugs delivered are new and complete.
  • Check visually the delivered drugs.
  • System should be observed to ensure that pharmaceutical products that expire first are sold and/or distributed first. First to expire, first to out principle (FEFO). Adequate controls should be in place to prevent the distribution of expired products.
  • Display drug products alphabetically.
  • Ensure that the storage areas and surroundings are properly conditioned and well-ventilated

Quality Records:
  • Systematic actions is necessary to ensure adequate confidence that the drug product (or service) and documentation will be satisfying the given requirements for quality.
  • Temperature monitoring charts should be available and regularly note the desired temperature to maintain the potency of drugs.
